NEW YORK (GenomeWeb) -- Food and animal safety firm Neogen announced today that it has acquired the assets of The University of Queensland Animal Genetics Laboratory (AGL).
According to Neogen, AGL is a major genetic testing supplier to all 27 of Australia's major beef cattle associations, and provides services for dairy cattle, sheep, goats, alpacas, and other species. It has annual revenues of approximately $3.1 million.
Neogen said that the deal is intended to accelerate the growth of its animal genomics business -- which includes its GeneSeek livestock genomic testing solutions -- in Australia, New Zealand, and Oceania.
Specific terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
"AGL's management and scientific staff will remain with the company and will continue their work to help Neogen grow our genomics business," Jason Lilly, Neogen's vice president of corporate development, said in a statement. "Adding AGL's complementary expertise, local support, and impressive customer base strengthens our animal genomic capabilities and presence."
AGL will be renamed GeneSeek Australasia and become Neogen's fourth animal genomics lab. Neogen acquired Brazilian animal genomics lab Deoxi Biotecnologia in 2016 and California-based animal genomics business Scidera Genomics in 2013. Neogen also maintains a lab in Scotland through its Neogen Europe subsidiary.
