HONOLULU, Jan. 23, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Honolulu-based WxOps® announced today the signing of a contract with Hawaiian Airlines to provide software for the exchange of enhanced operational data to and from its widebody aircraft. The data sent every few minutes includes position reporting, telemetry, aircraft-reported meteorological data, fuel status, aircraft systems data and more. Flight crews and dispatchers will have the ability to display graphical operational information both on the ground and in the air. WxOps' proprietary software operates on tablets mounted in the cockpit connected to an aircraft server and IP satellite transceiver. The Always-On transceiver communicates with the Inmarsat satellite constellation for worldwide IP connectivity.
WxOps Chief Operating Officer Albert Peterlin states: "Our OpsTablet™ technology represents the next leap in aircraft data delivery and software technology. We are excited about our continuing relationship and are proud to be part of the Hawaiian Airlines team."
"For dispatchers and pilots, the results are expected to lead to more economical and accurate flight monitoring and turbulence avoidance. This also makes it more comfortable for our passengers," says Daniel C. Smith, manager of systems engineering for Hawaiian Airlines. "The routine transmission of aircraft data using the less expensive IP protocols of the Inmarsat Swift BroadBand service will contribute to more proactive maintenance and reduce costs. The day-to-day productive use of data is the reason for the effort. The aircraft tracking aspect is an additional bonus."
The airline's B717 inter-island fleet will initially rely on cellular data connections to OpsTablet™ before the takeoff roll and rely on traditional ACARS while in the air. First installations on all fleets will begin in the second quarter of Q2 2015.
