The objective of this proposal is to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed Galley-Scullery Water Conservation System (GSWCS) for Navy shipboard applications. The core technology of the GSWCS is an innovative ozone contacting device, which generates ozone in micro-bubbles. Ozone, a strong oxidant, is capable of reacting with many substances by directly or indirectly attacking the bonding substrates yielding dioxide and water. It is a proven technology that can effectively remove all BODs and organics in gray water. Ozone can be generated through the air, creating a sustainable resource within the constraints of a limited shipboard environment. Ozone in micro-bubbles, which is about 1000 times smaller than the bubbles generated conventionally, provides tremendous surface area and low buoyancy. This dramatically increase the contacting surface and residence time for ozone oxidation and thus makes a compact, lightweight, and low maintenance system attainable. The ozone treated water is then further polished by a self-cleaning filter and sterilized by a UV light. The resulting effluent has a quality that can be recycled continuously for reuse. A complete system can be built into a shelf style unit or a compact unit for under counter installation.
