The National Institute on Aging recently awarded The Q-Track Corporation a development contract to implement a wireless location and fall detection device for use in nursing homes and other assisted living environments. Fall alerts will dispatch immediate help to the precise location of the resident automatically. Residents can summon assistance remotely giving them more mobility as they move through their assisted living facility. Falls are the most frequent event requiring hospitalization for persons aged 65 and older and costs an estimated $18 billion annually in the U.S. alone. The goal of the project is to decrease the incidence of falls with improved safety and quality of care in nursing homes.
Q-Track leads a team of world renowned experts including scientists from the University of Alabama, Huntsville and the University of South Florida. The group will develop and test ElderAlert with the cooperation of local nursing homes over the next year. In 2013 the team will conduct a clinical trial of the ElderAlert system at a 100-bed assisted living facility in Tampa, Florida operated by the Veteran's Administration.
Q-Track's NFER® Real-Time Location Systems (RTLS) employ low-frequency, long-wavelength signals to achieve accurate location information in difficult wireless propagation environments. The technology is used in the nuclear industry and manufacturing centers nationwide and internationally.
