Spark Client Gets $1M Federal Grant

Hamztec LLC, a business accelerator client of Ann Arbor Spark, has been awarded a Phase II Small Business Technology Transfer grant from the National Institutes of Health.

The funds will support the company's continued development of a technology that interrupts the behavior of those who suffer from trichotillomania, a disorder in which a person compulsively pulls out their own hair.

Hamztec's STTR award totaled over $1 million.

The company has been a Spark client since 2007.

Hamztec's work includes research and development of devices for the treatment of Trichotillomania and related repetitive body-focused disorders including skin-picking and nail and finger biting.

The company is currently developing a device that monitors the distance between the destructive and the affected area using inertial guidance technology. The company has patents both received and pending for the device.

The company also said it continues to develop additional devices for other mental health conditions
