As the Discovery Machine team returns to Williamsport, PA, the successes of the previous week at I/ITSEC gain full focus. Discovery Machine had the opportunity to meet with many key individuals at the show representing both companies and military branches from around the world. Each visitor left with an excitement of the possibility to use Discovery Machine's artificial intelligence (AI) technology to tackle their individual training challenges.

At the show, Discovery Machine highlighted multiple demonstrations in their booth. Three different simulations were used for the demonstrations including Bohemia Interactive's VBS3, The US Navy's Joint Semi-Automated Forces (JSAF), and the Unity3D game engine. Each demonstration was designed to highlight the power of Discovery Machine AI and showcase what is possible for simulated training using intelligent behavior models. For each demonstration a special emphasis was placed on the fact that Discovery Machine technology is not tied to only the simulations on display, but instead could be extended to any number of simulations, both commercially available and custom.

Discovery Machine's VBS3 integration was unveiled at I/ITSEC this year. Familiar behavior modeling approaches were showcased but new development was also highlighted. In this demonstration, customers watched how quickly a dynamic training scenario could be created. It focused on creating intricate player-character dialog, social networks, and situation-based events to create a realistic training experience. As questions were asked, character moods changed. If the wrong things were said, no more questions could be asked, whereas when the correct statements were spoken, more information was given.

New development efforts with the Behavior Modeling Console were also showcased. Included among them were intelligent BLUFOR soldiers which would maneuver in formation and respond to spoken commands realistically, intelligent OPFOR soldiers, an automated extraction helicopter, and more. Recent developments on Discovery Machine's automated A-10 aircraft were also available for demonstration. Efforts on this project showcased the inclusion of feedback from the recent Bold Quest initiative and demonstrated how with voice commands soldiers could practice real call for fire communications in a virtual environment.

An additional demonstration at I/ITSEC was a combined JSAF and Unity demonstration designed to train the helmsman positioned on the bridge of a destroyer (DDG). Discovery Machine automated all necessary ships and helicopters in the scenario to make for a realistic training example. Voice commands could be spoken to control the DDG, causing the ship to adapt accordingly. As the scenario progressed, a swarm of boghammers (a typical fast attack craft) would harass the DDG. This enabled realistic training of how to respond to incoming attack. Although Discovery Machine offered a stand-alone version of the demonstration in their both, a much larger version was on display at many locations on the exhibit floor including the Acme, Camber, and Navy booths. Each partner brought their own unique skills to training development team.

Ultimately, I/ITSEC 2013 was a success for Discovery Machine. The company is already pursuing potential business that would not have been possible prior to I/ITSEC. As the months progress, Discovery Machine will continue development to expand its behavior modeling capabilities still further.
