Featured firm in this article: DeltaNu LLC of Laramie, WY

Technology Developed:
Small Raman spectroscopic instrumentation for medical devices and for material identification. Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering assays were developed that can be coupled with the Raman device that was developed.

Uses of Technology/Products/Service:
Raman spectroscopy is a means to obtain chemical information pertaining to the structure of a sample and/or its composition. In this particular case, the Raman instrumentation used at the beginning of this project cost over $100,000 and was the size of a small car. We were able to miniaturize the Raman instrumentation to a hand held device that sells for less than $10,000. Applications are: Medical Point of Care, Brand Security, Homeland Security and Material Identification

Benefit to Company:
This SBIR and following grants lead to DeltaNu gain a market share of about 5% share of the Raman market. Several key milestones for DeltaNu were acheived from this grant:

1. We hired an engineer and develop our first commercial product.
2. We were able to develop an IP package that is currently in negotiation for licensing.

The initial product, the Advantage 200A, began a long series of successful products.

Other Comments Related to Company's Success Story:
We successfully executed our exit strategy and were purchased by Intevac on February 1, 2007. The significance of the acquisition is that we were able to keep 100% of the equity within the company by using SBIR funds to perform R&D and help commercialize our products.

Past R&D and/or Sales from this Project: $11,000,000
Estimated Future Annual R&D and/or Sales from this Project: $12,000,000
