ChemImage Corporation (Pittsburgh, PA) is moving its state-of-the-art hyperspectral imagers further into the commercial market, this time through the introduction of the company's upgraded forensic document analyzer.

The technology, called the HSI Examinerâ„¢, is a hyperspectral imaging instrument that already has gained a commercial foothold for the company. Adopted for use by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and courts nationwide, the HSI Examiner can scan and authenticate documents twice as fast as more commonly used video-spectral-analysis-based instruments, according to the company.

ChemImage placed its 2.0 software upgrade for the HSI Examiner on the market in summer 2012. The upgrade allows multiple live or stored images to be viewed at once and offers an overlay tool for comparing differences in images. For example, users can quickly and accurately compare legitimate document signatures with possibly forged signatures. Further, the upgrade will allow images to be stored as video for courtroom presentations.

The HSI Examiner is one of several technologies that ChemImage has developed, and MDA support had played a role in boosting the company's knowhow. Phase I SBIR funding from MDA-predecessor BMDO in 2000 allowed the company to develop imaging technologies that can detect flaws or anomalies in semiconductor materials. Beyond the HSI Examiner, ChemImage continues its marketing of hyperspectral products to both the commercial and military markets.
