Bodkin Design and Engineering, LLC (Newton, MA), has built upon its MDA-funded knowhow in high-end imaging equipment to provide a technology beneficial to oncology, homeland security, and factory inspections. The basis of the technology is a high-speed, high-resolution spectrometer that supports real-time data processing through a suite of tracking algorithms tha t the company developed.

MDA funded Bodkin with three Phase I and two Phase II SBIR contracts between 2004 and 2006 to develop hyperspectral imaging sensors. More recently, the company has begun working with University of Wisconsin researchers to use similar spectroscopy technology to identify cancer cells in moles.

The company now is actively looking into the homeland security market, primarily in the area of port security, where applications include quick detection of suspect chemicals aboard ships. Bodkin also is considering looking into the needs of inspectors at plants that manufacture mass quantities of steel and coatings for fast detection of any faults easily missed by the human eye.
