A Biometric Industry Milestone for Live-Scan Technology and Consumer Electronics
Buffalo, NY (PRWEB) August 12, 2012
Ultra-Scan Corporation, the global leader in ultrasonic imaging and sensor technology, announces the receipt of FBI Appendix F certification for its groundbreaking Thin Film Transistor (TFT) fingerprint sensor, which integrates the sensing layer with the imaging layer facilitating packaging into a variety of mobile device technologies for performing secure electronic fingerprint enrollment and authentication.
Development is underway for a miniaturized version of this technology which will result in a versatile sensor and interface control electronics package suitable for a variety of mobile fingerprint collection applications. The sensor can then be integrated into a wide range of existing as well as newly designed hardware devices such as smart phones and tablets, significantly expanding the multi-billion dollar markets for in-the-field, high accuracy authentication border control, enterprise security, military and consumer applications.
The new sensor is the culmination of a six year, $30M research and development initiative to create the next generation of low cost, low power, live-scan fingerprint products. The TFT sensor has an active image area of 3.0" x 3.2", a resolution of 500dpi, and is less than 1mm thick. Ultra-Scan has begun miniaturization of the sensor control electronics to a single Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) that, when complete, will result in an integrated sensor and control electronics package measuring 3.5" x 3.5" x 0.25", powered by USB, and suitable for a variety of mobile fingerprint collection applications.
The Company has remained focused on development of this revolutionary biometric technology that addresses key requirements for military and law enforcement personnel who rely on biometric fingerprint readers to provide battlefield identity superiority, to help secure our borders, and to make our communities safer. "The lack of a truly mobile four finger scanner has been a significant technology gap within our industry for the last several decades" notes Ultra-Scan President and CTO Dr. John K. Schneider. "The availability of this technology will also have a positive impact on commercial and consumer markets as the world continues to utilize smart phones and tablets in new and unique ways, and our technology will offer companies seeking the next generation in touch technology a means to bring secure authentication to these platforms".
The Company worked closely with the US Government to develop this first certified non-optical fingerprint scanner. The technology platform has evolved such that it can be used in a number of additional markets where it will dramatically advance traditional user interface technology, helping to simplify or enable existing consumer electronics technologies such as projected capacitance and In-Cell touch as well as consumer biometric applications. "We´ve been very pleased with how many markets our ultrasonic intellectual property and technology impact" said Dr. Schneider.
Ultra-Scan has begun working with a number of strategic partners to assist with the commercialization of the technology and to bring not only the four finger sensor to market, but also the Company´s single and two finger sensors, which are based on the same low cost TFT backplane technology. The Company continues to seek commercialization and licensing partners to help bring the technology to market and expects availability of commercial products in 2013.
About Ultra-Scan Corporation
Ultra-Scan Corporation, a portfolio company of Rand Capital (NASDAQ: RAND), is a developer of biometric and touch sensors, and an identity management solutions provider serving the government, healthcare, transportation security, financial and increasingly, consumer electronics markets. Ultra-Scan´s breakthrough live scan ultrasonic fingerprint imaging technology is distinguished from other authentication systems in three key areas: enrollability — the ability to read and enroll virtually any fingerprint; usability — the robustness to operate indoors or outdoors in real-world environments; and accuracy — increased system performance as a result of superior fingerprint image quality. The company has over 105 domestic and international patents current and pending, and is the only provider of Livescan Ultrasonic Identification Systems (LUIS®) worldwide.
