Missouri-Based Manufacturer Discusses Solutions to Advance U.S. Manufacturing
November 13, 2013 -- Washington, D.C. -- Dr. Terry Brewer, founder and president of Brewer Science, today urged Congress to support government revitalization efforts of America's manufacturing sector and create an environment in which more things are made in the USA. Dr. Brewer, a leading technology innovator credited with helping make popular microelectronic devices possible, testified before the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee, offering solutions to help usher in an advanced-manufacturing renaissance.
"America can be a manufacturing leader in the technology sector if our leaders recognize the key fundamentals that make manufacturing successful," said Dr. Brewer. "First, Congress must recognize that not all technological innovations emanate from cities on the east and west coasts; manufacturers and innovators across the heartland must also be supported. Second, as a proponent of STEM education, I feel it's important for leaders to recognize that STEM education doesn't create jobs, the industries and manufacturers that require these skills do. And finally, we need diverse technology solutions like those found in the bipartisan advanced manufacturing legislation sponsored by U.S. Senators Blunt and Brown."
Dr. Brewer said the Revitalize American Manufacturing and Innovation Act of 2013 (S. 1468), sponsored by U.S. Senators Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) and Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), would address the following areas:
Access to Innovation:
With its headquarters in a small Missouri town, Brewer Science has shown that location or size of a community is no longer a necessary factor for a successful business. Not everyone in the United States associates rural Missouri with advanced, high-technology manufacturing, but that view is changing because of innovation. Easier access to technology for advanced manufacturers across the country is key to making our country the global innovation leader.
Applied STEM -- U.S. Advanced Manufacturing:
Students will be attracted to STEM fields when they can clearly see the value of participating in these areas. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics do not create jobs by themselves. Industry and manufacturing that require these skills do. By focusing on the creation of advanced manufacturing centers, the proposed legislation provides places for people to implement STEM. To keep the best talent in the United States, the best opportunities should be located here.
Diverse Technology Solutions:
Congress should not attempt to determine technology winners. Not prescribing specific technology answers will encourage businesses and innovators to explore and determine the best and most needed solutions. This approach will help leverage the experience and capabilities of America's best talent, while encouraging those companies that deliver results.
