A recent publication in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences showed that 3D polymer scaffolds better recapitulate the tumors growth microenvironment as compared with two-dimensional plastic surfaces typically used in cancer research for testing anti-cancer drugs, according to researchers at Rice University, the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, and Mount Sinai Medical Center. "The tumor growth profile and protein expression characteristics were "remarkably unlike" those in 2-D," according to Prof. Mikos, one of the co-authors of the publication. According to those researchers, porous polycaprolactone (PCL) nano-fiber polymer scaffolds fabricated to support the growth of biological tissue for tissue engineering hold the potential to greatly accelerate the development of cancer drugs.
