Dr. Joel MacAuslan, STAR President and Chief Scientific Officer, today announced the spin off of the company's English intelligibility assessment business, Phonologics, as a separate operating company. "Over a decade ago, STAR received Small Business Innovative Research grant funding from the National Institutes of Health to develop the core, foundational research to assess English intelligibility. Intelligibility is the ability of a person to speak and be understood by native speakers of Standard American English -- also called "broadcaster English" or the "General American" accent. It's extremely gratifying to see such a bright future for this now grown-up technology." Adds Phonologics' CEO Art Berube, "English is the language of global commerce. We know we have the right technology to assess the intelligibility business problem head-on, quickly, scalably, and objectively." Phonologics has operations underway in major US research universities, English training centers, call centers in Bangalore, India, and schools in Beijing, China and Fuji, Japan.
