FULL LIST OF BAY AREA WINNERS FOLLOWS
In a state of big winners, small Bay Area biotech companies collectively pulled down the most money from the health care reform act's federal biotech tax credit and grant program.
California life sciences companies accounted for 28 percent of the $1 billion — $278 million in grants and $3 million in tax credits — awarded through the two-year Qualifying Therapeutic Discovery Project program. Most of those awards, certainly the larger ones, were for Bay Area companies.
The program made the awards after a competitive review of applications by the National Institutes of Health.
The money came in little dabs, like a $52,471 grant for Walnut Creek's Bio3 Research Inc. to move along an accelerated wound healing treatment for connective tissue, as well as big buckets, like nearly $2.6 million for 10 programs from South San Francisco's Pain Therapeutics Inc., $2.4 million for Theravance Inc. and $2.36 million for Rigel Pharmaceuticals Inc. of South San Francisco.
Those Pain Therapeutics programs range from another abuse-resistant painkiller to an experimental Alzheimer's treatment and are validation of the company's innovation, according to Chairman and CEO Remi Barbier.
The money should go a long way for some companies in an industry where about a quarter of public companies — and some estimated the same percentage of private companies — have died since late 2007. Those companies have found it difficult to tap the public markets, especially initial public stock offerings.
Michael West, president and CEO of BioTime Inc. of Alameda, said its $733,000 in awards will help it recruit new employees.
BioTime's three awards are to develop cell progenitors of cartilage through its OrthoCyte Corp. subsidiary, a technology to deliver purified human cell types through its Embryonic Sciences Inc. subsidiary and a technology to create embryonic-like stem cells from adult cells.
The Biotechnology Industry Organization last month estimated more than 5,600 projects requesting more than $10 billion had been requested.
Awards were limited to $5 million per company of 250 or fewer employees concentrating on new drugs, curing cancer or cutting health care costs.
