Two early-stage life sciences firms that provide less-invasive testing for researchers and medical professionals will split the $55,000 grand prize in the first Wisconsin Governor's Business Plan Contest, the Wisconsin Technology Council said Wednesday.
The firms that tied in final round judging in the contest are NovaScan, a Milwaukee company that has developed technology that can detect breast cancer at an earlier stage than other medical imaging devices in use, and BioSystem Development, a Middleton firm that offers an alternative to laboratory tests used by drug researchers and other scientists.
NovaScan was co-founded by Bill Gregory, Chris Gregory and Larry Wells. William Gregory is dean of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. In 2003, NovaScan became the first firm to receive funding from WiSys Technology Foundation Inc., a subsidiary of the University of Wisconsin-Madison's licensing arm, Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation. The creation of WiSys in June 2000 has allowed WARF to reach beyond Madison to other campuses and has led to 15 patent applications, according to the Technology Council.
There were 330 entrants in the contest, which was co-produced by the Wisconsin Technology Council and the Wisconsin Innovation Network Foundation Inc.
