Stellarray develops and manufactures flat panel radiation sources and systems using them to solve important problems in irradiation and imaging. Our first major product, scheduled for summer 2013, is a self-contained blood irradiator (SCBI) which uses our proprietary flat panel x-ray sources (FPXS) to ensure the safety of transfusion blood supplies. We are also developing smart, digitally addressable x-ray sources (DAXS), to enable CT systems with no moving parts for improved medical and industrial imaging.
In over 10% of blood transfusions, the blood must be irradiated to eliminate the risk of fatal graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). This is now done with radioactive isotopes, primarily of cesium, which require increasingly costly and burdensome security procedures. Stellarray’s self-contained blood irradiator (SCBI), using our FPXS panels on either side of a compact, easy-to-use, bench-top cabinet, is perfect for the job. SCBI can deliver the required radiation dose more quickly, in a smaller footprint, with a lower cost of ownership and none of the regulatory burden of isotopes.
