Highest Wind LLC is developing wind power technology for low-wind locations. The firm has created small-scale, on-site electricity generation systems that cost-effectively help power rural businesses, farms, ranches, wineries, golf courses, resorts or entire villages located in the low-wind areas of the world. The firmâs Highest Wind Energy Gliders are able to harvest the winds a thousand feet above the ground, which blow two to three times faster than wind near the ground. Wind resource maps reveal that less than 15% of the planet has near-ground wind speeds that are adequate for producing electrical power cost-effectively. Wind turbines are limited to harvesting near-ground winds by the height of their towers, making them cost-effective on only a small fraction of the planet. The firmâs gliders are similar to a childâs kite and can fly - rising and descending - a thousand feet above the ground (below FAA controlled airspace) pulling a high-strength tether to spin a generator on the ground. Four other companies are publicly developing related Airborne Wind Energy (AWE) technology but all are targeting utility scale applications â 1Mw or greater. No other AWE developers are designing distributed renewable energy generation systems to serve the agricultural
