Evergreen Solar developed and manufactured photovoltaic (PV) modules. The company filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy in August of 2011 and went out of business in July of 2012. The Company's String Ribbon manufacturing process used less silicon and fewer manufacturing steps in order to lower cost. Evergreen has shipped over 35,000 solar panels globally for residential and commercial applications in remote power and emerging grid-connected markets. The firm's solar power products were capable of providing reliable and environmentally clean electric power throughout the world and were targeted at the global solar power market. Product sales were primarily solar panels, which were used to generate electricity for on-grid and off-grid applications. Off-grid applications included the electrification of rural homes, lighting for small, rural schools and power supplies for water pumping. On-grid customers used a percentage of Evergreen Solar's products as a clean, renewable source of alternative or supplemental electricity.
