Tinsley Laboratories manufactures custom precision optical components including complex aspheric surfaces for reflective and refractive systems from 50mm to 1.5 meters in size and a wide variety of materials, including glass, beryllium and silicon carbide. Founded in 1926 and also known in the industry as the Asphere Company, Tinsley has many years of experience fabricating precision optics in such areas as Space and Astronomy, Laser Fusion, Surveillance and Tactical. After acquaiiton by L-3 Communications. Tinsley Laboratories, Inc. designed, manufactured, and distributed electro-optical and infrared (EO/IR) sub-assemblies for lithographic, military, and other agency government applications. The company specializes in the optical fabrication, metrology, and optical coating of reflective and refractive optics; and engages in the design, analysis, fabrication, assembly, alignment, and test of optical components, assemblies, and sub-assemblies for space, airborne, and ground applications. It also provides mirrors, lenses, windows, gratings, etc.; and optics ranging from reflective and refractive precise aspheric, flat, and anamorphic optical components to common spheres and aspheres. In addition, the company offers EO subassembly design and integration; and optical component fabrication and design services ranging from build-to-print to concurrent engineering to design-to-specifications. It serves semiconductor, commercial and industrial, defense and security, space, ground astronomy, laser fusion and directed energy, special science project, laboratory test equipment, research and development, and specialty optic markets. L-3 Communications Tinsley Laboratories, Inc. was formerly known as Tinsley Laboratories, Inc. and changed its name in 2006 and operated as a subsidiary of L-3 Communications Corporation. More recently, as part of a restructuring process at L3, Tinley was sold to Coherent in July 2015
